Evil Interstellar Empire Product Management Trial Mini-Mission

Mini assignment - what is preventing the product adoption?

A breakfast conversation #

One morning April, a junior product manager, sits next to you in the canteen.

Hey, do you have a minute to chat? I’m having some trouble getting pilots to adopt a new dashboard design I’ve been working on, and I’m hoping you might be able to help.

I’ve gotten some great feedback on the mockup from a few pilots, but when it came time to roll out the prototype, not many of them were interested in upgrading. I’m not sure what I’m missing here. Do you have any ideas or advice on how I can get the pilots to see the value in the new dashboard?

Interesting. I’m curious what were the main improvements that you’ve made?
I’ve made a lot of UX improvements for the pilots. The first improvement is that the widgets on the dashboard appear depending on the context
Can you give me an example?
Yes, sure. For example, the distance to the locked target widget does not make sense if the battle mode is not switched on, so I’ve made this widget hidden by default. Another example is the fuel level - if it’s full or almost full there’s no need for it to occupy the valuable space on the dashboard. For this last one I’ve also changed the fuel level analog indicator to a digital indicator showing the expected distance that you can still fly with the remaining fuel.
That’s clear enough. And how did you get feedback from the pilots?
I’ve explained the idea of context-sensitive widgets and their benefits to the pilots. In particular we talked about how these widgets could make their lives better by freeing up the space on the dashboard and helping them focus on what matters. Then I asked them if they liked my idea of context-sensitive widgets, and most of them said yes. After that I’ve asked if they would be willing to upgrade to a new one in the future and most of them seemed positive…
And what do you exactly mean by “seemed positive”?
Well, Ben said he definitely would not mind trying it out, and Clara said she’ll upgrade if it’s as good as it sounds.

Understood. I think I’ve heard enough.

I think the reason why the new prototype is stuck is that...
